On July 4, Kyoto city announced the new arrival of [KYOTO_WiFi], a free wireless LAN access setup in 630 locations, for tourist use. Now, both domestic and international visitors to the city can gain Internet access and 'tourist hotspot' intel from various locations such as bus stops, metro stations, convenience stores and so on. Fukuoka city has adatped the same program, however, Kyoto is the nation's first to offer over 100 locations.

The government announced its policy on the 13th this month to grant special visas for Chinese tourists visiting Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima areas, which were affected by the East Japan Earthquake. The new visa scheme will enable them to visit any number of times within its term of validity.

Chubu International Airport has started test-running their i-pad interpretation television service from the 1 May 2012. Marking the 7th year of the opening of its port, this is one of the new initiatives to accommodate foreign tourists in Japan. Services in English, Chinese and Korean were available but now there are three additional languages - Portuguese and Spanish.

"I speak English" badges were produced and created by Narita Airport and its tenant committee for shop staff to wear. There are around 400 Narita Airport staff who can speak a non-Japanese language other than English. The use of badges makes it easier to spot those who speak the various languages (30% of all staff).

Fukuoka city underground stations will offer free wireless internet service to tourists and residents from the 27th of May. By June, there will be a total of 35 stations with free wireless internet connections.

On 9 April, Google announced that Japanese musuems joined Google Art Project where you can view high resolution images of museums and museum works. A ceremony was held at Tokyo National Museum to celebrate the new venture.

During the Spring Conference 2012 which took place on the 6th of February, Rakuten CEO Koji Mikitani showed interest in starting business with LCC. Rakuten Travel announced back in December that they will be partnering with Peach Aviation (MM) and has started accepting accommodation and car rental bookings online on MM website. As with the partnership with MM, Mikitani is keen to work along with LCC to offer dynamic packages.

With the help of foreign residents living in Mie and the surrounding prefectures, an organization in Ise city has started accepting participants to join their free guided tours. Perhaps due to the effect of the earthquake, the nuclear issue and the strong yen, there is a decreasing number of foreign tourists visiting Ise. The idea is to get foreign residents to introduce the beauty of Ise to their home country and attract visitors.

HTB Cruise will run its first cruise ship service between Nagasaki and Shanghai on Feburary 29.
Between Feburary 29 and March 14, they will provide a one cruise ship service a week. After March 16, two ships will be run per week. Services are available at a cost of 9,800yen, or for advance bookings, tickets costs 7,800yen (one-way trip). At these costs, passengers are offered comfort-seats, located on 5th and 6th floor.

On January 16, Kansai Airport launched a rental service of smartphones that come with a translator.
It can translate into and from Japanese, English and Chinese. The rental fee is 1,300 yen a day.

The site focuses on detailed information especially interseting to the Taiwanese travelers. One of its contents includes a special feature on Tohoku, which will help the Tohoku area recover from the decreased number of visitors.
